When you have covered as many weddings as I have, it's fairly obvious that brides go to a lot of trouble when it comes to choosing the right shoe for their wedding day. Indeed look in any bridal shop or online and straight after the dress itself, the shoes are the next thing to heavily feature in any bridal selection.

Often though many of these fabulous shoes are hidden underneath a dress, so it becomes even more important for a photographer to ensure that the bride gets a perfect record of their footwear. I like to try and get images during the bridal preparations, perhaps in the box or simply being held in the bride's hands. Sometimes a lovely low-level image works really well with the shoes actually on and using a shallow depth of focus, I can isolate the shoes to be in focus, while everything else softens to a blur.

When it comes to buying the perfect wedding shoe I'd recommend trying on as many as possible and try to pick a pair that are comfortable. I've lost count of the number of times brides have said to me at the end of the evening that they wish they had brought along a change of footwear! A simple pair of white pumps are ideal if you dress is long and reaches the floor. Final bit of advice is the height of the heel - if you are not used to wearing them on a regular basis, think long and hard before going for those 'killer-heels' - nothing worse than aching feet! Platform heels and kitten-heels maybe a good alternative if you are looking for a bit of extra height. And don't forget to bring your shoes along to all dress fitting sessions!
